ABOUT US

VRENI FRAUENFELDER
Founder

Vreni Frauenfelder, founder of the Afghanistanhilfe, visited Afghanistan in 1975 for the first time. The hospitality and generosity of the Afghan people impressed her so much that from that time on she cared about the country and its people very much. Even the fact that the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan end of 1979, did not deter her from returning to this country time and again.

In the mid-eighties Vreni Frauenfelder met the Afghan doctor, Simar Samar, in a refugee camp in Quetta (Pakistan) and the two women soon entered into a close friendship. Sima Samar looked after many Afghan refugees who escaped their war-torn country to find protection in Pakistan. Vreni Frauenfelder decided to support Sima Samar and has travelled to Afghanistan at least once a year since then to help the people in need.

In 1988 Vreni Frauenfelder founded the Afghanistanhilfe together with four supporters. In close cooperation with Sima Samar’s Shuhada Organization, the Afghanistanhilfe has set up numerous humanitarian projects in the sector of education, health, fighting poverty, and emergency relief. The donations from Switzerland helped and are still helping to build and maintain hospitals, schools, orphanages and women’s refuges in various provinces of Afghanistan.  Clean drinking water was provided to remote villages and the hungry population could be supported with food. Also, giving animals to poor farmers (especially sheep) to help themselves, is one of the many humanitarian projects of the Afghanistanhilfe, distributed where it is needed and sustainably improving the lives of so many poor people.

WHAT THE AFGHANISTANHILFE STANDS FOR

The following principles apply when we implement our aid projects:

  • The Afghanistanhilfe team works for free.
  • Providing means is done following the principle: «Capacity building»
  • We remain politically and denominationally neutral. We provide support across ethnic restrictions.
  • We particularly involve the local population. In this way they identify with the projects and this also reduces the costs of implementation.
  • We follow a zero-corruption tolerance. We refuse any attempt of third parties taking advantage.
  • We only support projects financially, provided the long-term operation is guaranteed – either by promises made by a government or by us.
  • We check how means are used on a regular basis and locally in person. In this way we can make sure that our aid meets the people’s requirements and also that it actually reaches the population.
  • Administration and advertising costs are kept at a minimum (2% of the overall expenses). Donations are therefore almost completely passed on to people in need in Afghanistan.

PARTNER ORGANISATIONS

The Afghanistanhilfe implements all its aid projects in cooperation with local project partners.  We are convinced that these local organisations know much better what is required for the people there and how best the aid can be implemented in a manner that is typical for the country. This type of cooperation also promotes the sustainability of our aid.

SHUHADA ORGANIZATION (SO)

The Shuhada Organization is one of the oldest relief organisations in Afghanistan. Shuhada was founded by Sima Samar in 1989 with the objective to have an organisation that professionally implements those projects financed by the Afghanistanhilfe. On behalf of the Afghanistanhilfe it implements in particular projects in the Hazarajat region, in the Afghan provinces of Bamyan, Ghazni, and Daykundi. The Shuhada Organization provides relief regarding health, education, human rights and women’s rights as well as strengthening the position of women and children in the Afghan society. The local partner has 164 committed people working for them, 52 of which are women.

AARYUB DEVELOPMENT AND WELFARE GROUP (ADWG)

The Aaryub Development and Welfare Group is a smaller relief organisation that implements projects in the Pashtun province of Paktia. The ADWG was founded by Abdul Qadir. They focus on constructing and operating health- and educational institutions. About 25 persons work for this local partner.

KHOST OLD MEN ASSOCIATION (KOMA)

The Khost Old Men Association is an organisation that was set up by the Council of Elders (so-called «White Beards») of the Province of Khost with the objective to implement mutual relief projects. Due to this strong link to the local authorities of the province, our projects, implemented in cooperation with KOMA, are firmly established and accepted in the community.  Khazan Gul Tani, who studied Agriculture in Germany, is head of KOMA. An exciting book has been written about his impressive life («Der Unbeugsame: Das Leben des Khazan Gul Tani für Afghanistan»)[The Indomitable: The Life of Khazan Gul Tani for Afghanistan]. KOMA concentrates on providing support in education and agriculture.
