CURRENT PROJECTS
SCHOOLS
Afghanistanhilfe supports the construction of school buildings in various regions of the country. Due to the lack of a working school infrastructure and teachers, caused by the precarious security situation or because of economic, traditional and cultural reasons, about half of the children of school age – a large part of them are girls – do not go to school or attend school only on an irregular basis. Lessons take place in the open more often than not. We endeavour to provide every child with the right to being educated.
ORPHANAGES
We call our orphanages «Ashyana», which means «Bird’s nest». These children lost their mother or father in the war, due to poverty or illness and are burdened with terrible experiences in their young lives. Some half-orphans live with their remaining parent at an Ashyana. We endeavour to offer these children a new and secure home.
HOSPITAL
Apart from smaller health centres, the Afghanistanhilfe manages a proper hospital in Jahori – one of the oldest, largest and most important projects of the relief organisation. The hospital opened in 1994 after long years of construction – the Taliban had substantially disrupted the construction several times by destroying and looting the site. The hospital offers medical help to about 40,000 patients every year.
HEALTH CENTRES
Basic Health Centres and Health Sub Centres offer medical help mostly in remote regions. The health centres provide emergency aid, assist births, maintain vaccination programmes and stock important medicaments such as antibiotics and painkillers. In addition, they also offer consultations and preventive work regarding questions of family planning and hygiene.
DISTRIBUTION OF SHEEP
Poverty in Afghanistan is widespread. A small herd of sheep can secure the survival of a family. The families can use the wool to make clothes and either use these themselves or sell them on the market. The same goes with the milk.
This assists the self-help that shows a sustainable effect.
GIVE HOPE
Almost half of all the children in Afghanistan, about 3.7 million, do not go to school. 60% of these are girls. We stand up for them – with your help.
